Family Therapy
We are having happier times and able to discuss emotions and feelings more openly. We agree that the 'rollercoaster' ride is less scary and more exciting these days.
When abuse takes place, it can affect not only the person who has been abused but their whole family. Where an adult has been sexually abused, for example, this experience can impact on their emotional state or on their parenting role, thereby affecting everybody in the family. If a young person in the family has experienced sexual violence, parents and siblings can struggle with difficult feelings about what happened, resulting in whole family dynamics changing. Family members can worry about becoming over protective or that they will add to the grief and trauma if emotions are expressed, resulting in communication and relationship difficulties at home.
Facilitating family conversations in a safe and separate environment allows opportunities for the family that has become traumatised to begin rebuilding and developing new and helpful relationships with each other. We aim through this service to help families address issues such as guilt or shame, communication systems, setting and maintaining boundaries, enjoying time together as a family and supporting young people to access or stay in education.
